The Runaways release date: March 19, 2010Bob Berney and Bill Pohlad's Apparition has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Floria Sigismondi's "The Runaways." The acquisition has taken place more than a month ahead of the film's planned world premiere at the Sundance Film FestivalM in late January. Apparition plans to release the film March 19. The biographical story of the friendship between Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, who went on to form the groundbreaking all-girl rock band the Runaways in the '70s, the indie film stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as the band's teenage guitarist and singer, respectively. The fact that both actors star in the super-successful "Twilight" franchise likely played a part in the film's appeal. Sigismondi based her screenplay on the book "Neon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story" by Currie. "Floria has crafted a beautiful story of Joan and Cherie's tumultuous relationship on- and offstage, as well as a kick ass rock 'n' roll journey," Berney said. The film was produced by River Road Entertainment and Linson Entertainment. John Linson, Art Linson and Bill Pohlad produced; Jett, Kenny Laguna and Brian Young serve as executive producers. Apparition recently released "Bright Star" and "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day." They will soon release "The Young Victoria" and "The Tree of Life." Source and Source.Update: The movie is rated R (Source.)

New Runaways StillsEarlier this morning I posted a high resolution image from The Runaways. It was an image that had been previously released, but I figured some of you might not have seen it in high res. While I figured that would be it for The Runaways until this Sunday when I hopefully see the movie at Sundance, I was just provided eight new images from film and not only are most of them new…they’re all super high resolution. So if you’ve been looking forward to seeing Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett…hit the jump to check out the new images. The Runaways follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself-and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Apparition will open THE RUNAWAYS in over 1400 theaters on March 19. The music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s stars Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Danielle Riley Keough, Scout Taylor-Compton (TV’s “Arrested Development”), and Michael Shannon. The film marks the first theatrical collaboration between Apparition and River Road Entertainment. Executive Produced by Joan Jett and Produced by River Road and Linson Entertainment, THE RUNAWAYS will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival Sunday, January 24.

New 'The Runaways' Character PortraitsMCDONNELL: How was it working with Kristen Stewart, who plays you in the film? What did you tell her? How did she study you? JETT: Well, I found Kristen to be through and through totally professional and just great to be around. I found us to be really, scarily similar, just in our physicality, the way we move through space. The first time we met was a little over a year ago, New Year's Eve. She came to see us do a concert. We hung out for the whole day, and I just dumped on her about everything I could think about The Runaways-I mean, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I told her all that stuff and how much it meant to me. Then she went off to do New Moon, and I didn't see her again until about two weeks before The Runaways thing started. But she is so authentic. The thing that came through to me was that it was important to her to capture it. She really wanted to nail it. So I gave her all The Runaways music that I could find; I gave her tapes of me talking. . . . When we were together prior to the start of filming, she was staring at me the whole time. And I was fine with it because I knew she was watching my posture, my mannerisms, everything I did, the way I hold my hands, just everything. And she really soaked it in. When we were hanging out together on set, it was like I had a mirror image. Even just sitting around, we'd do the same thing at the same time. It was just great-and it wasn't creepy. It was wonderfully special. Source.
