HBO leads Golden Globe nominations In Treatment, True Blood pace cable net; Fey, Baldwin, Paquin, Laurie, Shalhoub, Hamm, Applegate get acting nods. It's shiny trophy time in Hollywood, but before the bald-headed first-place prizes get handed out on February 22, the Golden Globes--also known as "The Oscars' precursor"--have to be doled out. The nominees are in, and the field features familiar faces and some surprising entries.
As usual, HBO dominated the nominations list thanks in large part to its miniseries John Adams and Recount. But it's In Treatment that scored the most nominations, with five, for best drama, best actor (Gabriel Byrne), two for best supporting actress (Melissa George, Dianne Wiest), and best supporting actor (Blair Underwood).
New series and TV.com favorite True Blood sunk its teeth (ugh--sorry) into the Globes with a relatively shocking nomination for best drama and a very shocking nomination for Anna Paquin as best actress in a drama. We're not saying it's not worthy, we're just gleefully surprised that Globes people loved it as much as we did. Entourage was nominated for a trio: best comedy, best actor (Kevin Connolly), and--you guessed it--best supporting actor (Jeremy Piven).
NBC's 30 Rock and The Office made the cut for best comedy, along with Californication, Entourage, and Weeds. On the drama side, Dexter, House, In Treatment, Mad Men, and True Blood will vie for the title.
Caviar-eating cable television once again proved itself better than the plebeian major networks, picking up 39 nominations to the majors' 15 (PBS grabbed three). NBC leads all majors with six nominations, followed by ABC with five, Fox with three, and CBS (America's most-watched network) with a grand total of one (thank you Neil Patrick Harris!).
The awards ceremony will take place on January 11 at the Beverly Hilton in beautiful southern California. NBC will air the telecast at 8 p.m. ET.
