Grey's Anatomy: Season Five by Five Sep. 18, 2008 Get five sneak-preview vids of the fifth-season premiere of Grey's Anatomy, along with five spoilerific tidbits about what's to come. Sneak Peek 1Spoiler bonus: Following this scene, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) starts stealing patients for Seattle Grace, since it is no longer the No. 1 teaching hospital, and they need to up their trauma ranking. Also, late in the episode, a very cranky chief (James Pickens Jr.) gets angry about the ranking situation and goes off on one of the people in this scene like he has never gone off before. You—and the person he yells at—will be stunned. Sneak Peek 2Spoiler bonus: Even though Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and George (T.R. Knight) seem to be getting cozy, she finds out he slept with the other Grey...and that throws a wrench in the works. Sneak Peek 3Spoiler bonus: See that blanket wrapped around Miss Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl)? Seconds before this clip starts, Alex (Justin Chambers) wraps it around her. Yes, we see a nicer, better-behaved Alex, but that won't last long—not even until the end of this episode. Sneak Peek 4Spoiler bonus: Meet Major Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), the Major Hottie who butts heads with every male doctor in Seattle Grace. There may be blood running down his leg, but that doesn't bother Hunt much; just wait until he staples his own behind later in the episode. Sneak Peek 5Spoiler bonus: Cristina (Sandra Oh) has to take care of Hunt now, but later in the premiere she may need a little help herself. Speaking of Cristina, she tells Meredith what the rest of have been thinking for a while now: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are stuck in a vicious circle, and Cristina's sick of hearing about it! EXTRA CREDIT CLIP & SCOOPclick to WatchBy now you will have deduced that this is a dream sequence, seeing as how the title of the episode is "Dream a Little Dream of Me," but Derek is stabbed later in the episode, and Nurse Rose (Lauren Stamile) has something to do with it. That lady is full-on Looney Tunes. Source

Grey's Anatomy: Mary McDonnell to Guest Star Sep. 23, 2008 by Kristin Dos SantosHoly frak! President Roslin is joining Grey's Anatomy! Mary McDonnell is in advanced talks to join the drama for a multi-episode guest arc, confirms ABC. But who will she play? The nature of Mary's role, first reported by our good friends at Galactica Sitrep and Mo Ryan of the Chicago Tribune, remains a mystery. All we fans know for now is that it's a guest gig. The character's identity—patient, doctor or recently arrived relative—remains shrouded in Grey's famous anti-spoiler force field... But remember how last week I told you about the casting call for Little Miss Type A, the high-powered type A personality female character in her 20s or 30s? If you knocked off the age restriction, Mary McD would certainly be able to fill the other requirements of the part, don't you think? And now that I think about it, Mary could very well be a more mature Kate Walsh/Addison Montgomery. Could this be the older woman of McSteamy's dreams? What are your thoughts? Who else could she be playing? A hospital administrator come to help or harass the Chief? Or maybe Alex's mentally ill mother? All I know is that it would be a bit much if she were playing a dying leader of any stripe, but besides that, I think the options are endless! Source

Grey's Anatomy' adds McHunky to start fifth seasonSeptember 24, 2008 McDreamy and McSteamy, make way for McHunky. That's right. There's a new doctor operating on "Grey's Anatomy," the ABC hospital drama that begins its fifth season with a two-hour episode at 9 p.m. Thursday on WEWS Channel 5. And the new cast member actually has a last name that Mc-fits the "Grey's" Mc-nickname pattern for its so-called "studs in scrubs" characters. Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, best known for his star turns on HBO's "Rome" and NBC's short-lived "Journeyman," makes his first appearance Thursday night as U.S. Army surgeon Owen Hunter. This will be at least an 11-episode tour of duty for Hunter, but if the drama-and-trauma character catches fire with the fans, look for McKidd to become a regular with stars Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Chandra Wilson, Patrick Dempsey and Cleveland native James Pickens Jr. What won't change, promises executive producer Shonda Rhimes, is her hit show's blend of life-and-death drama, soap-opera romance and quirky humor. "I feel like the humor that came out of Grey's' came because we were dealing with such serious situations, and people do use gallows humor a lot of the time," said Rhimes, also the series' creator and head writer. "Creating that funny underbelly to what was going on in the serious situations is what made the show feel more like real life than just a drama where everything was serious." While McKidd will be injecting intriguing new elements into the Seattle Grace mix, Heigl, who plays Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, provided one of last season's most dramatic moments for "Grey's Anatomy." Unfortunately for Rhimes, this happened away from the set. Heigl, an Emmy winner for "Grey's Anatomy" in September 2007, made headlines by griping about not being given any material last season worthy of submission for Sunday's prime-time Emmy awards. This is not the kind of drama a top-10 drama show needs, and the man in charge wasn't happy. "I think it's unfortunate when there's any kind of turmoil on a show," said Stephen McPherson, ABC's entertainment president. "There are so many people who work so unbelievably hard to make that show . . . and I never like to see when any of them are in any way taken lightly." With Heigl's film "Knocked Up" a box-office hit, some saw her comments as a ploy to push through a resignation from the hospital staff. "She's absolutely staying with the show," McPherson said. "There's an unbelievable story line for her this year, which is really central to everything that's going to go on this season. We're really excited about that." Rhimes, busy running both "Grey's Anatomy" and the spinoff series "Private Practice," is just eager to put the Heigl headlines in the rearview mirror. "I have to say that my reaction was that I found it surprising," Rhimes said. "I actually have a really wonderful working relationship with Katherine, and I love and respect her as an actress, and, as everyone knows, Izzie is one of my favorite characters." She was not insulted, Rhimes said. She hardly has time to be insulted. "At the end of every day, I sort of sit down and think, OK, I got through that one, now let's get to the next one,'" Rhimes said. "I mean, I really wish for a clone. A clone would be awesome." Source

Romance colors 'Grey's Anatomy' this seasonSep. 24, 2008 By Bill Keveney Grey's Anatomy ended last season on an upbeat note: Doctors Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd got together for good. That leads to a new question as the ABC medical drama opens Season 5 (Thursday, 9 ET/PT): What happens after happily ever after? For Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), being a committed couple is hardly the end of the story, creator Shonda Rhimes says. "They've never had the chance to get past the 'Will they, or won't they?' and be in the 'What happens now?' part of it," she says. "There's a lot of humor and pathos and pain to be played in what it's going to mean for the two of them to really be together." Dempsey says the two are "always going to have conflict. They're always going to be working on issues." In addition, "for good" doesn't necessarily go past this season, Rhimes says. "But they're definitely together for good for now. I'm with them. They believe they are together for good. I believe they are together for good." •Romantic possibility for Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). In Thursday's two-hour premiere, which features victims of an ice storm, she's attracted to a military doctor (Kevin McKidd), but he must return to Iraq. "We will see him again," Rhimes says. •A "lovely story" for Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl). Details are hush-hush, but part of it involves things heating up between Izzie and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). She won't get a brain tumor as has been rumored. •"Devirginized" doctors. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) will each explore first-time feelings for another woman. Rhimes consulted GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to try to make the story authentic. There are humorous possibilities as Callie sorts out a new direction: "What would she be thinking? What would she be doing?" Rhimes says. •Lexie Grey's (Chyler Leigh) attraction to roommate George O'Malley (T.R. Knight). "It doesn't go where you'd expect," Rhimes says. And Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) is in final talks for a multi-episode arc. Viewership fell 20% last season (15.6 million) but rebounded with a big finale (18.1 million). The writers' strike hurt ratings, although Grey's felt a sharper decline than many other hits. The strike also shortened the season, which delayed the Seattle Grace residents from finishing their second year. They will face pressure trying to reverse a drop in national hospital ratings. Still, the mood of the characters is "pretty happy," Rhimes says. "Everybody is starting fresh. There are some good leaping-off points from the end of last season." Source

'Grey's Anatomy' goes post-'happily ever after'Sep. 24, 2008 By LYNN ELBER LOS ANGELES (AP) — First came the achingly romantic hilltop reunion between Dr. McDreamy and Meredith that ended last season's "Grey's Anatomy." Is heartbreak next? "We ended last season with the end of the fairy tale," said series creator Shonda Rhimes. "I always thought this season was about what happens after the `happily ever after,' for all our characters." "For some, it's about jumping off into something new. It feels like a very fresh start for everybody," Rhimes said. The ABC show's two-hour season debut is 9 p.m. EDT Thursday. An on-air promotion has provided a clue about one potential challenge facing Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). It includes a brief scene in which Derek is confronted by nurse Rose (Lauren Stamile). "I wish there were a good way to say this: I'm carrying your child," Rose tells Derek, whose stunned look might match that worn by "Grey's" fans. When last seen, McDreamy was embracing Meredith amid a sea of candles after therapy allowed her to see the light about their relationship. Rose's revelation — if it's to be taken at face value — strikes an ominous note for the couple known in shorthand as Mer-Der. Adding to the mystery: In an ABC podcast in May, Rhimes said Rose isn't pregnant, and was later quoted as saying she wouldn't deceive "Grey's" loyalists. If that's the case, Rose — or the network's promotional department — is quite the manipulator. Rhimes, who's highly protective of plot twists, won't tip her hand about how the story plays out. But she's openly upbeat about season five. "We've settled in from all the attention paid and all the hoopla. We feel like we're back to where we were in seasons one and two, in the sense that the writers feel a little bit fearless," Rhimes said. "We know our characters so well at this point that now is the time to take chances." The Hollywood writers strike that shut down most TV production for months had an unexpected benefit, Rhimes said. "It was the first time in four-and-a-half years I wasn't working nonstop. It was a chance to sleep and clear my brain. ... I know what happens next for these characters in a way I hadn't known before." For Drs. Grey and Shepherd, that means a bold step toward commitment. But as Rhimes signals, it's unlikely their path together will be smooth. The new season brings guest stars Bernadette Peters and Kathy Baker and a new medical man at Seattle Grace: Kevin McKidd, playing a military doctor who Rhimes said "makes an impression" on Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). There's also a familiar face, Katherine Heigl, despite speculation that the series star might want to shrug off her scrubs. The talk began this summer, after Heigl said she wasn't submitting her name for Emmy consideration this year because the show didn't deliver the material to warrant a nod. She won a 2007 Emmy for the role of Dr. Izzie Stevens. "Talk? Who?" Rhimes responds tartly when asked about the issue, adding, "We have every intention of seeing Katherine for the entire season." Asked if the actress has expressed any desire to leave, Rhimes said, "No, she has not." "Grey's Anatomy" has provided off-screen drama before, most notably stemming from an ugly clash between cast members Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight. Washington, who used an anti-gay slur, was fired. "I have to say we've been through a lot," Rhimes said. She attributes it to "the `Dawson's Creek' phenomenon," in which a "bunch of lovely and young actors" must learn to cope with the sudden fame a TV hit brings. "These are people who went from living their lives to not being able to walk down the street without paparazzi being able to follow them wherever they go," she said. Rhimes, a newcomer herself as a series TV producer (she now has a second show, the "Grey's" spinoff "Private Practice"), said she feels as if "everybody has grown up together." "I drive my little golf cart over to the set and everybody is just really happy. ... So it's nice to see that we're growing into it," Rhimes said. Does that mean no more surprises? "I would be shocked if there were no more surprises," she said. "It's the nature of the beast. I don't necessarily feel the same about `Private Practice.' I just feel like this particular show is its own animal. ... If it's a calm day, we're suspicious." Source

Shonda Rhimes Says Heigl Not Leaving Grey’sSep. 24, 2008 Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes wants to set the record straight: There has been no talk of Katherine Heigl leaving the medical drama. Rumors about the starlet wanting to exit the show began this summer, after Heigl, who plays Dr. Izzie Stevens, said she wasn't submitting her name for Emmy consideration this year because the writers didn't deliver Emmy-worthy material. When asked about the rumors, Rhimes told The Associated Press, "We have every intention of seeing Katherine for the entire season." But has the actress expressed any interest in leaving the hit show? Rhimes responded firmly, "No, she has not." Rhimes cites what she calls "the Dawson's Creek phenomenon," in which a "bunch of lovely and young actors" must learn to cope with the sudden fame a TV hit brings," as a possible reason for the all the off-screen drama (including Isaiah Washington's alleged gay slur toward costar T.R. Look Out Grey's Fans: Here Comes McHunkySep. 24, 2008 Kevin McKidd winces slightly, the expression on his face suggesting either intense pain or exquisite pleasure. Suddenly, Sandra Oh pops into view, rising up from below his waist. Hang on a sec. Cameras are rolling and although Grey's Anatomy fans might think this is yet another display of inappropriate bedside manners, she's only tending to his leg wound. Still, the scene is so suggestive that the crew starts to titter. "Are ye takin' the pess outta me actin'?" McKidd asks, his Scottish brogue as thick as haggis. As if anyone could "take the pess outta" the brawny 35-year-old actor playing Owen Hunt, the newest addition to the hit show's duty roster of studs in scrubs. A military doctor, he's here to provide some manly yin to Sandra Oh's tightly wound Dr. Yang. The role will probably be the one to make him a household name. Last year, he received high marks as a time traveler in the short-lived Journeyman, which followed a raved-about performance as a "bad-ass centurion" in HBO's landmark series Rome. "I got to wear togas and open-toe sandals, swing swords and decapitate people," McKidd enthuses. "He's charismatic, sweet and sexy," gushes Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. "And despite being Scottish, he felt right to play a U.S. military surgeon — a man of few words who would be the last person interested in the emotional and romantic goings-on in Seattle Grace." In the Grey's season premiere (Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9 pm/ET, ABC) McKidd is dashingly heroic: After getting injured in a car wreck during an ice storm, he performs a tracheotomy with a pen in an ambulance. (Yang finds this mighty impressive.) "Owen is a maverick," McKidd says. "He doesn't care about what people think or about being liked." McKidd, on the other hand, is very friendly, roaming the set and bonding with his colleagues. "It's weird joining a show like this," he admits. "The medical stuff can be pretty intimidating. I guess I thought if I am good with a sword, I'd be good with a scalpel." He can always get tips from Patrick Dempsey. Or, more likely, some amiable ribbing. "You don't eat porridge, do you?" Dempsey asks McKidd, a reference to his homeland. "As a matter of fact, I had some this morning," McKidd retorts. What makes him perfect for Grey's? Dempsey points to McKidd's forehead. "You have a facial scar, which is key to being on the show," he says with mock solemnity, noting his own faint forehead scar. "It's important to have one — it gives you an edge." Jokes aside, acting on a hit TV show is a dream come true for McKidd. Although he now lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wife, Jane, and their kids (Joseph, 8, and Iona, 6), it's a far cry from his upbringing in rural Elgin, Scotland. The son of a plumber and a secretary, he went to work in the nearby Glenfiddich distillery when he was still in his teens. "You became a fisherman, a farmer or worked in the distillery," he says. "I knew if I stayed any longer, I'd become a plumber like my dad." Instead, he moved to Edinburgh, joined a theater and won a role in Trainspotting. These days, when he's not on the Grey's set, McKidd says he can be found "loafing" or walking his three dogs, Rosie, Patch and Pip. Of course, in his bodacious accent, it comes out Rrrro-Say, Pitch and Pep. "I still have to practice my American accent," McKidd allows. "It's like karaoke [kerr-ay-OH-kay]: It's really easy to do bad karaoke and just as easy to do a bad American accent." No keddin', but something tells us his will be flawless. — David A. Keeps Source

From TV Guide's Mega BuzzSep. 25, 2008 Is there any hope for some Alex/Izzie romance in the new season of Grey's Anatomy? — LaylaMickey: I spied the season premiere the other day, and — at least in that episode — the simple answer is "yes," there is hope. But as with most things in Shondaland, the real answer is much more complicated. (That's what you get when half of the couple is profoundly self-destructive.)

Exclusive: 'Grey's Anatomy' Enlists 'Alias' Badass to Play Callica SpoilerSep. 25, 2008 by Michael Ausiello At this rate, the bisexuals will soon outnumber the straights at Seattle Grace. Sources confirm to me exclusively that ex-Alias vixen Melissa George is in final negotiations to join the cast of Grey's Anatomy as an intern with, um, an open mind toward sexuality. To wit, I'm told she's being groomed as a potential love interest for one of Grey's other two burgeoning bis, Callie (Sara Ramirez) or Erica (Brooke Smith). (That noise you hear is Callica fans sticking pins in their Shonda Rhimes voodoo doll.*) A Grey's insider tells me George was initially going to be introduced by way of a gurney, but rumor has it Shonda Rhimes was so enamored with the ex-In Treatment star that she tweaked the role to give it more long-term potential. Of course, it's also possible the patient thing was just a decoy to throw off spoiler hunters like myself -- in which case, I'm on to you, Rhimes! George's probable hiring caps a busy couple of weeks for Grey's casting honchos. In addition to The L Word's Janina Gavankar and up-and-comer Brandon Scott checking in as new interns, Battlestar Galactica's inimitable Mary McDonnell has sealed a deal to play a doctor for a multi-episode arc. Grey's Dissection: Couples News Nobody Knows! Sep. 25, 2008 by Kristin Dos SantosOK, show of hands. Who wanted to scream "Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!” at Dr. Meredith Whiny-Pants Grey during tonight’s premiere of Grey’s Anatomy? Wow. That's a lot of you. (You can put your hand down, Patrick Dempsey.) Thankfully, Cristina (Sandra Oh) did the honors in a scene that pretty much stole the two-hour episode (don't read any further until you've seen it)—well, along with the intro of her new love interest Major Hottie, who so lived up to his name. So, what really went down and what’s the latest exclusive scoop on Alex (Justin Chambers) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl)? You can only find it here ... CURRENT SYMPTOMSA Major Case of the Hotties: Anyone else foaming at the mouth during those scenes with Cristina Yang’s hot-as-fire new love interest, Kevin McKidd? What’s that? You don’t have rabies? Well, fine, but something tells me there may have been a little more saliva wandering around your oral cavity. Sure, the facial hair takes a little getting used to, but I for one am digging the raw, rugged, and so-not-pretty new flavor at Seattle Grace. (Pooh-pooh to the McMen who don’t have real-life McNames!) You? (And psst...Keep reading for a hint on his future.) Hot Flashes, Then Chills: I know we’re supposed to feel for Alex given everything he’s been through, but his whiplash-inducing hot-cold nature toward Izzie is a bit nauseating, isn’t it? I really wish the writers would just pull these two in one direction or the other, and oh, hey! Look down there in the Diagnosis section—we have some amazing, definitive, exclusive scoop on Alex and Izzie’s fate! (Read only if you want to know.) Incredible Non-Melty Icicles! Grey’s has never been known for its realism, but I’m sorry, I had to laugh out loud at that renegade icicle piercing Christina’s gut (I hate it when that happens!) followed by a long scene in the O.R. where they debate what to do with it, in which the icicle…wait for it…does not melt. Cue the scientists: This technology could cure global warming. The Gaying of Grey's: First the writers plan two seasons ago to make Cristina’s character bisexual (a plan foiled by some loudmouth scoop hound whose name may or may rhyme with Shristin), then they start the current “exploration” storyline with Callie and Hahn, and now comes the news that Melissa George (last seen intentionally pissing off Alias fans) is coming on to play a bisexual character who may do a tonsil tango or two with Callie and/or Hahn. This can only be leading up to a makeout scene between Steamy and Dreamy in season nine, and this makes me happy. But how do you feel about Callie and Hahn and the new girl coming on board? PROGNOSIS: Read Only If You Want to Know"It's On!" This is what sources very close to the show tell me regarding the couple many of you have been waiting to see since season one: Alex and Izzie. I’m told it’s definitely happening this season and will be a major storyline—most likely, I'm guessing, that "huge love story" Shonda Rhimes promised for Heigl. So…I’m dying to know, what do you think? Comment below, pretty please! Major Hope: Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of Kevin McKidd, aka the army doctor who planted one on Cristina. And I for one will be tuning in each and every week to eagerly await his return...with a drool bucket standing by. McMansion: I’m told their dream house is still in the works, so don’t give up on Meredith and Derek just yet. She may stop whining and learn to embrace her happily ever after, after all! If not, I say we give Cristina that magic icicle with permission to employ it as a weapon. Source

But in the next episode, "Here Comes the Flood," airing Thursday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. on ABC, not only do the waters coming rushing in, but—whoa—McDreamy might be moving in to Meredith's house? The second clip below gives us a little glimpse of what Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) has in store for Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) future... Click to WatchWhat do you guys think? Should McDreamy move into the frat house? Or should Meredith and Derek stay in separate domiciles until the pair of them can build the House of Candles together? Source

Wait a Minute, Are Meredith and Derek Getting Married?Oct. 22, 2008 by Kristin Dos Santos Shut the front door! USA Today is reporting that Patrick Dempsey is hinting at a hitchin' to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). He told a reporter Monday night "there may be" wedding bells in the future for Meredith and Derek on Grey's Anatomy. "Rumor has it something might be happening," he said. "I think they have to. It's time for them to get together!" That may very well be the case (depending on which impassioned fan you ask), but is a wedding really going down? Luckily for you, I have reliable inside sources who just gave me the inside scoop... "We haven't shot anything related to any kind of engagement or wedding," a source on set whispers. "And I haven't seen anything in a script." Well, hmph! Thanks so much, Mr. Sexy Hair, for getting our hopes up! Of course, the nuptials could very well happen further down the road, and it certainly seems obvious that Meredith and Derek would end up happily (married) ever after at some point, but my guess is that will be a wee bit closer to the end of the series. So perhaps Patrick is just putting his own plea out there to end the Mer-Der yo-yo games? Could be. In the meantime, though, sources also tell me that as far as they know, there are no current plans to build a dream-house set for Meredith and Derek. So again, that may happen sometime in the future (end of the season?), but not right now. What do you think of a Mer-Der wedding? Too soon, or should they just tie the knot already? Source

Chyler Leigh: Lexie with McDreamy Would've Been a Nightmare!Oct. 23, 2008 Chyler Leigh may not be sure whether Grey's Anatomy's Lexie and George will ever be on the same page romantically, but one thing she knows for certain: Mer's sis setting her sights on Derek would have been a prescription for disaster. In this Q&A, Leigh lets loose on Lexie's love life, the tease of being Ellen Pompeo's "sister" and much more. TVGuide.com: Let's start off talking about this week's episode, where "Lexie goes to great lengths to have George notice her romantically," says the ABC logline. What's involved?Chyler Leigh: Lexie's just kind of throwing herself out there – obviously, in her mind, but he's just not getting it. TVGuide.com: No, he's not.Leigh: He's completely oblivious. [Laughs] Even little comments that she is making repeatedly.... TVGuide.com: Like, "Let's go out and celebrate you passing the exam!"Leigh: "Let's go out and celebrate," and then she's left in the dust. Even so, she didn't really take that too close to heart. She just keeps throwing herself under the bus. TVGuide.com: Do any of her tactics involve whipping out the Stuff Magazine cover you did a few years back with Mia Kirshner?Leigh: Oh, lord.... TVGuide.com: Because that would raise George's eyebrows. Leigh: Yes, but that wouldn't have been Lexie. [Laughs] And unfortunately it was me, many, many moons ago. TVGuide.com: George and Izzie certainly had their fans as a couple. Were you nervous to be his potential "rebound" girl?Leigh: Nah! On paper, they're a really good match, in the way that they get along and support one another. When I first learned about it, I was like, "Oh, that's really cool!" And I love T.R. [Knight]. TVGuide.com: Plus, it's better than coming in to bust up Meredith and Derek, which is where I thought they were going when Lexie first flirted with Derek at the bar.Leigh: Oh, gosh, yeah. I got enough flack for that when I first came on! I'm really, really, really glad that didn't happen, because I probably would have gotten slashed tires. TVGuide.com: The Lexie we saw in that scene with Derek seemed more sure of herself. Was the character purposely tweaked between then and when we first really got to know her?Leigh: What was special and different and about that scene was that fact that 1), her mother had just died, so she wasn't necessarily thinking the way she normally would, and 2), she was drunk. A lot of times, that brings out a lot more courage than we actually have. Even when she slipped and hooked up with Alex, it wasn't out of her being a bad girl. In the midst of her having so much thrown at her at one time — all these negative feelings from work and from Meredith — that was her one ploy to get some sort of positive affirmation. TVGuide.com: Was it a tease to be cast as Ellen Pompeo's sister and then get so few scenes with her — let alone any civil ones?Leigh: No kidding! We kind of laugh about that. It's something that, before the writers strike, they were going to bring up more. But because we lost time, [Grey's creator] Shonda [Rhimes] didn't want to just cram it all into the last couple of episodes. It will be explored further this season. TVGuide.com: I find myself screaming at the TV, "C'mon, can't we just get along?!"Leigh: [Laughs] We do that, too. When we do have scenes together, we have to ask, "We haven't seen each other in two episodes. Are we cool yet?" TVGuide.com: I like your scenes with Eric Dane, where Sloan calls Lexie on her feelings for George, yet she resists being goaded. Leigh: There's something cool about their "friendship." She finds in him somebody that she can be more of herself with, and that emboldens her. TVGuide.com: He's a great talk-to for Lexie, if only because no one else wants to listen to her... or they're George.Leigh: Exactly. TVGuide.com: During a long day of shooting, who's most likely to lighten the mood on the set?Leigh: I would say Sandra Oh. No offense to anybody else – Katie Heigl is very funny, too – but Sandra really is one of the coolest people I have ever met. TVGuide.com: Back when Fox's Reunion was abruptly cancelled, we were flooded with emails demanding resolution. Where were we going with Carla?Leigh: Alexa Davalos' Sam was the one who ended up dying, so everybody was trying to cover their tracks. [The shooter] was supposed to be her daughter, who later down the road would have come to work for me. I tried to get them reconciled, but someone breaks into the apartment of Sean Faris' character, while Sam was there with her daughter. In a struggle with this intruder, Amy accidentally shot Sam. TVGuide.com: OK, one last tease about what's coming up for Lexie....Leigh: All I can say is this: There are really, really big, good and juicy things coming up for Lexie. One of them involves the other interns who Lexie starts to bond with. She becomes more assertive as they all try to get more hands-on training. It's pretty cool. Source
