Grey's Anatomy returns for its sixth season with a two-hour event Thursday, September 24, on ABC. Below is the network's official synopsis of the Season 6 premiere.
Technically, the event is listed as two separate episodes, both written by Krista Vernoff and featuring Jessica Capshaw as an official cast member for the first time.
The first episode, entitled "Good Mourning," will air at 9 p.m.
The hospital staff is left to deal with the aftermath of George's passing. Hitting the staff hard, they all find unique ways to get through the various stages of grief.
George's mom returns, faced with the difficult task of deciding what to do with his organs.
The second episode, entitled "Goodbye," follows at 10 p.m.
As this episode begins, time has passed. Everyone at Seattle Grace Hospital is struggling after losing one of their own and are turning to any distraction they can find.
Meredith and Derek are consummating their marriage anywhere and everywhere, while Cristina and Owen have been instructed to abstain from sex by Dr. Wyatt.
Guest stars for "Good Mourning" are Shannon Lucio as Amanda (the woman George saved at the end of last season), Debra Monk as Mrs. O'Malley, Martha Plimpton as Pam, Mitch Pileggi as Larry Jennings, Zoe Boyle as Clara and Zack Shada as Andy.

Below is ABC's Season 6 overview of Grey’s Anatomy, posted on the show's official site and as a press release to sum up what the new campaign has in store for us.
It also serves as a recap of last season for those unfamiliar.
Here's the network's brief overview. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seems like the doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital are always fighting for something, from access to cutting-edge surgeries to relationships to patients’ lives.
And they don’t always win.
After a long, hard struggle, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) may have finally won the battle for each other’s hearts, sealing their love for one another with vows written on, of all things, a blue post-it note.
One battle the staff of Seattle Grace may be losing is saving the lives of two of their own, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight).
And Alex Karev (Justin Chambers, pictured above), Izzie’s new husband, is left holding his breath until next season’s premiere along with the rest of us.
Meanwhile ...
•Tough-loving Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is fighting her own battles. She faces the very real possibility of losing her husband over her extreme dedication to her career. •Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) is fighting relationship fears while on-again-off-again boyfriend Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) fights the emotional scars that he brought home from Iraq. •Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) is fighting for her family’s respect as a new relationship with Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) blossoms into the healthy romance she needs. •Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) is trying to overcome his past and become a better man - with or without Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). Perhaps Lexie is too young for him after all. •Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), The Chief, is fighting to keep his hospital together and to find some way to forgive himself for his past mistakes. Grey’s Anatomy can be as complicated as any neurosurgery, with episodes that will make you laugh out loud, cry your eyes out and cheer its victories - whether they involve saving a patient’s life or sealing that kiss we’ve all been hungering to witness.

As we're sure you're aware by now, Seattle Grace and Mercy West are merging, and that means a new crop of doctors aiming to put our favorite Grey’s Anatomy characters out of work.
October 15 is the day the staffs merge, fittingly in a tense episode titled "Invasion." Word is that specifically, Izzie Stevens and Lexie Grey find their heads are on the chopping block.
“We’re not the most welcome faces at Seattle Grace,” says newcomer Robert Baker.
But off set, the new blood has welcomed with open arms, especially by Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), who recently took them all out to lunch!
Here's some scoop on what we can expect from the newcomers ...
Izzie and a pair of Seattle Grace's new residents.
•Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) “He’s a very confident, competitive, fearless leader and a bit of a cocky, hotshot surgeon,” says Jesse. “He’s cracking jokes left and right and going in there and taking no prisoners. So far, I’ve had a spat with Cristina and shared scenes with Owen, Lexie and Derek.” •Dr. Reed Adamson (Nora Zehetner) “She’s very feisty and comes on a bit strong at first,” says Nora, a longtime friend of Chyler Leigh (Lexie). “But she’s a good doctor who cares a lot about the patients, especially with the merger getting in the way of that. Everyone is in competition and worried about getting fired, so there’s a lot of fighting with Izzie, Alex and Cristina for the best surgeries.” As for romance with Alex, Nora says only “Perhaps.” •Dr. Charles Percy (Robert Baker) “He’s a general surgeon who has a problem keeping his mouth shut,” says Robert, who has shot scenes with Bailey, Alex and Derek. “In my first episode, some complications arise between Charles and Izzie, causing head-butting. Then some things happen that the fans will definitely want to see.” Could these characters share more than scalpels? “Izzie’s a married woman, but never say never.” •Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) “April’s eager, a little insecure, passive-aggressive and tries to undermine Lexie,” says Sarah, who has “really enjoyed playing a bitch.” But April also has a sensitive side. “You’ll see her writing some surprising things in her journal.”
